Blue duck (Hymenolaimus malacorhynchus). This rare duck is native to New Zealand, preferring a habitat of fast flowing mountainous rivers. It has also been introduced to other parts of the world. The blue duck is the subject of conservation efforts by the New Zealand Department of Conservation. Populations have decreased due to competition for its invertebrate food, predation from introduced mammals, and the destruction of its natural habitat. Photographed in Sussex,UK,in January | |
