Male mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) walking on ice. The mallard duck breeds in the temperate and sub- tropical areas of North America,Europe and Asia,migrating further south in the winter. The breeding males have distinctive green heads and black-tipped yellow bills,as here,whereas the non-breeding males have drabber brown plumage like the female birds.
