Mallards. View of a male (left) and female (right) mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) on water. The mallard is a very common duck which lives on all inland waters throughout North America and Eurasia. They have adapted well to life in built- up areas, and are found even in large cities. They feed by "dabbling",swimming across the water with their bills at the surface, straining out plant and animal matter. They also upend themselves to feed amongst mud and weeds. They breed in the northernmost parts of their range, and may migrate southwards for the winter. Mallards may reach a length of around 55 centimetres. Photographed in Colorado,USA | |
