Greater flamingos wading in a lake. The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, southern Europe and southern Asia. It can reach a height of 140cm. Flamingos range in colour from white to bright pink depending on their intake of carotene found in food such as shrimps and algae. Flamingos filter-feed using their turned beaks to remove any unwanted silt. The colouring has a considerable impact on the flamingo's chances of mating as colourful individuals make more desirable mating partners.
