Green-backed heron (Butorides striatus) wading in aquatic plants. This bird,also known as the mangrove heron,is found in brackish swamps,which are usually near the coast,or inland by shaded lakes and rivers. It ranges from Central to South America,and from Africa to eastern Asia. It feeds mainly on fish and amphibians,lying in wait for its prey,before thrusting out its neck to either impale it or catch it in its beak. It grows up to 45 centimetres in length | |
