Male saddle billed stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis). This stork, which gets its name from the yellow saddle upon its bill,is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It is a wading bird that catches its food by spearing it with its bill or by sweeping the water with its bill,to find it by touch. The bird's diet consists of fish, frogs and occasionally small mammals. The saddle billed stork, which can reach heights of 150 centimetres,is unusual among birds as it does not call. Instead it communicates by rattling its bill. Photographed in Kruger National Park,South Africa | |
