Northern gannet. Engraving of a northern gannet (Morus bassanus) with its pre-Linnaean species name,Anser bassanus. Modern species names were not used until the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-78) methodically reclassified the entire animal and plant kingdoms according to strict anatomical criteria. Prior to Linnaeus, animals and plants had been classified by the English naturalist John Ray (1628-1705),whose system was based on key characteristics such as hoofs, toes and teeth.
