Storm petrel. Historical artwork of a storm petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) hovering over the water's surface. This small sea bird feeds on small fish, crustaceans and plankton, which it takes from the surface of the sea. It is also known to follow ships, especially trawlers, and feed in groups in their wakes. It spends its entire life at sea, coming to land only to breed. It may reach a length of up to 20 centimetres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) | |
