Snow petrel (Pagodroma nivea) with its chick in a nest. Snow petrels are completely white apart from small black eyes and a short black tail (not seen). Snow petrels are highly manoeuvrable in the air, although they never stray far from their home base. They feed on small fish and carrion. Females lay only one egg each year, which is incubated for 45 days. Chicks fledge in 50 days. Adults can grow up to 35 centimetres in length, and they have life spans of 14-20 years.
