Wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) chick on its nest. It has survived the winter by being fed on regurgitated fish from its parents. At around 10 months of age,it will take flight and gain its independence. It is moulting, and will continue to do so several times over the next few years until it gains the white plumage of an adult. It will not breed until around 10 years of age, when it will return to this location to find a mate. When full-grown,its wings may span over 3 metres as it soars for hundreds of kilometres on the winds of the southern oceans. Photographed on Bird Island,South Georgia, southern Atlantic Ocean | |
