Gentoo chick calling as it sits next to its parent. The breeding season of the gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is from spring to autumn with females laying a clutch of two eggs. The first egg and chick is larger, and usually the only one that survives. Both parents will feed the chick for 3- 4 months. The gentoo penguin stands 50-70 centimetres tall and weighs 5-6 kilograms. It hunts for fish and krill in the day, remaining near the colony island. Photographed on South Georgia Island,Antarctica | |
