Black-footed penguins
Black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus). Other names for this penguin include the African penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call). Penguins are flightless marine birds. This penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa,and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much time at sea,feeding on fish,squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land. It can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird. Photographed on Boulders Beach,South Africa
