African penguin (Spheniscus demersus). This flightless marine bird is also known as the black- footed or jackass penguin, due to its loud braying call, which it uses to communicate with other penguins. It is the only penguin to be found on the African continent, living on the coast and coastal islands around South Africa. It is a medium-sized penguin, growing between 60 and 70 centimetres tall and weighing around 3 kilograms. It mates for life and feeds on fish, crustaceans and squid. It is listed as a vulnerable species due to oil spills and competition with commercial fisheries | |
