Ostrich chick (Struthio camelus). This is a newly hatched chick, and it is lying motionless to try and avoid detection. Ostrich chicks are around 25 centimetres tall when born. They grow rapidly, but require care and protection for the first 3 to 6 months. The male usually cares for the newborn hatchlings, showing them what to feed on. The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, and at maturity (2-3 years) it can be over 2 metres tall. Photographed in the De Hoop Nature Reserve,in the Western Cape region of South Africa | |
