Ostrich hatchling. Image 7 of 8. Ostrich chick (Struthio camelus) with the eggshell from which it just hatched. The ostrich lays around 20 eggs which are about 15 centimetres in length. The eggs take around 40 days to hatch. The chicks are mobile as soon as they hatch,and join the adults feeding mainly on plants. Ostriches are found in arid areas of central and southern Africa.
