Ostrich. View of a male ostrich (Struthio camelus) standing on grassland. The flightless ostrich is the largest and tallest bird in the world, having an average height of 2.5 metres. They live on the plains and semi-desert of central and southern Africa, usually in small groups of males with several associated females. The females are a dull grey/brown colour. Ostriches feed on plants, eating their seeds, flowers, leaves and stems. They are well adapted for a walking life, and can also run very fast when threatened, reaching a top speed approaching 70 kilometres per hour. They can even carry a human without any apparent effort.
