Smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) curled up in the grass. This snake is non-venomous and is one of the rarest and most endangered spiecies in Britain. It only lives in a couple of isolated pockets in the West Country. They are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the loss of their heathland habitat is the main reason for their decline. Photographed in Dorset,UK | |
