Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). This is the largest lizard in the world, reaching over three metres in length. It inhabits the Indonesian island of Komodo and some nearby islands. It feeds on almost any meat, including carrion and live prey, hunting any animal between the size of a small rodent and a water buffalo. Bacteria in the mouth of a Komodo dragon infect its prey when it is bitten, causing death due to blood poisoning within 1-2 days. The dragon often tracks its dying prey over several miles before feeding. The Komodo dragon has been known to feed on livestock and even humans | |
