Slow-worm. Coloured X-ray of the slow-worm lizard,Anguis fragilis. The scientific name fragilis means "fragile worm",and refers to the movable tail which easily breaks off (as it has here) when the lizard tries to escape from a predator. One- half to two-thirds of this lizard consists of tail. The title "worm" refers to its loss of limbs. In X-ray the skull (yellow) of this reptile and elongated vertebral column with ribs can be seen. Anguis fragilis is distributed widely across Europe, preferring shady areas and moist ground. They feed chiefly on earthworms and slugs. They have stiff, slow movements, and give birth to live young | |
