Agama lizard (Agama agama). The dominant male or cock, unlike immature males and females, has a distinctive orange head. The agama cock will defend his territory against subordinate males and intruders by displaying on a prominent rock. If a challenge occurs it will bob its head before meeting the challenger. Fights between agama lizards involve repeatedly striking with their tails. The agama lizard can grow up to 25 centimetres in length and feeds mainly on insects. It waits under rocks until an insect approaches, before catching it with its long sticky tongue. Photographed in the Tsavo National Park,Kenya | |
