Common iguana,Iguana iguana,found in Tropical South America; this specimen comes from the Caribbean island of Trinidad (1982). They are commonly found in forests along the banks of rivers; and are often present in the sunny upper foliage as much as 20 m above the ground,though juveniles do not climb as high. Older animals feed chiefly on plants,whereas the younger ones prefer small animals. These iguanids grow to a length of about 2. 2 m,and both sexes have permanently visible dewlaps (fold of skin below the throat).
