Twenty four hours,Polychrus marmoratus,so called because it is believed that you will die in 24 hours if one jumps on you. This picture is a close up of its eye surrouded by a "dead" horny epidermis which is convoluted to form scales. The eyes are located either side of the head so that they command a large field of view but are capable of binocular vision only over a small field. Because binocular vision is necessary for precise estimation of distance; the eyes have become so mobile that they can fixate on prey simultaneously,as in the chameleons. The distance of the prey can therefore be estimated "stereoscopically" | |
