Nile crocodile. Young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) being held. This crocodile is found throughout Africa in rivers, freshwater marshes, estuaries and mangrove swamps. The young of the Nile crocodile are olive green with dark bands across their backs. These bands fade and the overall colour darkens as the crocodile matures. The young live only in water for several weeks immediately after hatching, first feeding on insects and minnows, and then crustacean and larger fish as they grow. Young Nile crocodiles stay in their mothers' care until they are two years of age | |
