Giant Galapagos tortoise. View of a giant Galapagos tortoise (Testudo sp.) among rocks in the Galapagos Islands. This tortoise is found on only one of the Galapagos islands. Giant tortoises were once present in huge numbers on the Galapagos Islands until they were almost wiped out by humans. Those remaining live chiefly on the warm but dry lava soils and regularly wander to the highlands for their water and plant needs. The paths beaten out by countless generations of tortoises are also used by humans to find sources of water. The Galapagos Islands are owned by Ecuador, and lie to the west of South America,in the Pacific Ocean | |
