Olive Ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea),laying eggs. This species of turtle is found in the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It is considered an endangered species in many regions due to the activities of trawling, offshore drilling, poaching and the destruction of breeding grounds. Adult females congregate in large numbers on a few beaches once or twice a season. They each lay up to 100 eggs, which are incubated for 50-60 days. Hatchlings, measuring just 3.8 centimetres long, then emerge and immediately crawl towards the water. Photographed in Barra de la Cruz,Oaxaca,Mexico | |
