Snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). This freshwater turtle is found in wetlands throughout North America, from southern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. An adult can have a shell length of around 45 centimetres, with the tail as long again. They feed on whatever they can catch in their powerful beaks, including fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and carrion. They also eat vegetation. Despite their aggressive reputation, they are kept as pets by some people, and can become quite tame after a while. Photographed in Tennessee,USA | |
