South American bullfrog. View of the South American bullfrog (Leptodactylus pentadactylus) seen sitting on a dead leaf. Its light brown body with grey and black markings on the legs gives it ideal camouflage against dead leaves. The South American bullfrog belongs to the true frog family Ranidae; it is eaten by humans because of its large body. The genera Leptodactylus are also known as nest building frogs. These will lay their eggs in foam masses in or near water. Frogs are amphibians of the order Anura. They have characteristic squat bodies with hind legs specialised for jumping.
