Bufo marinus, the giant toad or crapaud (body length 15-20cm),a highly adaptable toad found in South America, the Caribbean & introduced into Florida & Australia. It was introduced into several sugar producing countries as a means of controlling pests, although the success of this measure is considered dubious. An undesirable effect was that it became a threat to indigenous amphibians. The genus has developed a warty skin & secretes a toxic poison. It is also known to squirt poison over a distance of 30 centimetres using its parotid glands, which lie behind the eyes. This specimen from Trinidad is seen here calling | |
