Lionfish (Pterois volitans) swimming over a shipwreck. This predatory fish is native to the Indo-Pacific region, however,it has recently been found in the Atlantic Ocean and has become established in the coral reefs along the Gulf Stream. It is a popular fish in the aquarium trade, and it is thought that it may have been released into the wild from aquaria. It fins have spines containing a potent toxin, which deters predators and can deliver a very painful sting. Photographed at the Pompoose shipwreck,North Carolina,USA | |
