Giant frogfish (Antennarius commersonii),hidden amongst sponges in the Pulau Sipadan,Sabah,Malaysia. These fish are thought to have evolved camouflage based on the many coloured species of coral found on reefs. Frogfish hide motionless, using prehensile fins resembling limbs to remain still in the reef. A lure above the head is used to attract small fish, following which frogfish strike with their huge mouths. Sponges such as those in which the frogfish is hiding and the large barrel sponge, are common throughout the Sipadan's current-swept reefs | |
