Lionfish (Pterois volitans). This brightly- coloured and distinctive fish lives around reefs and rocky shorelines in the Indo-Pacific region. It is a nocturnal predator, chasing smaller fish into crevices before eating them. It also eats shrimp and other crustaceans. Its flowing fins are reinforced with spines which can inject a powerful venom. This strong venom is mainly used for defence rather than on the fish's prey, and is potentially fatal to humans. An adult lionfish may reach 50 centimetres in length. Photographed in the Red Sea | |
