Lionfish. Two lionfish (centre,Pterois sp.) or red firefish swimming around a shipwreck. The lionfish inhabits coral reefs and the shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It hunts for smaller fish and crustaceans at sunset, when diurnal fish make their way to night-time resting spots. Its camouflage allows it to glide between coral and attack prey with one swift gulping motion. The fanlike fin spines are used as a means of defence. They are able to inject a powerful venom that can be potentially fatal for humans. Photographed in Malaysia | |
