Leopard flounder. Close-up of the head of a leopard flounder (Bothus pantherinus) camouflaged on the seabed. Its eyes (dark) are at upper centre. This flounder starts its life looking like a normal fish. As with all flatfish, one eye migrates around its head as it matures, coming to rest next to the other eye. The fish then spends the rest of its life on one side, with its mouth (lower right) opening horizontally. It swims with undulating movements of its body. The leopard flounder inhabits the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It feeds on smaller fish and crustaceans and may reach over 30 centimetres in length | |
