It has an oval,laterally compressed body (up to 11 centimetres long),a tapered head,very long anal fin and a dorsal fin normally held high. The pelvic fins are modified into two fibre-like structures used for touch and in courtship. Gouramis (subfamily: Trichogasterinae) are popular aquarium fishes.
