Scales of the Atlantic salmon,Salmo salar. These cycloid scales (circular, untoothed) are found in smooth-finned fishes such as salmon. The age of fish can be determined from the annual growth rings on scales. This is a useful method in salmon farming where age-composition of fish groups is analysed. Scales can be plucked without serious injury to the fish. Pigment in the scale epidermis gives the fish its markings | |
