Blue-spotted stingray. Eyes of a blue-spotted stingray,or fantail ray (Taeniura lymma). This stingray inhabits the warm and shallow areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and spends most of its time buried in the sand with only its eyes visible. At these times,it breathes through its spiracles, one of which is seen by its eye at lower left. It mainly eats shrimp and crabs. It has a poisonous barb (not seen) on its tail, which can inject venom from a gland at its base. It does not use this weapon on its prey, but solely in defence. The venom is highly toxic.
