Flamboyant cuttlefish. Flamboyant cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi) resting on the seabed. This cephalopod mollusc is popular with pleasure divers because of the spectacular colour patterns it produces on its skin. Cuttlefish can alter their appearance by expanding or contracting special colour cells, called chromatophores. They also possess excellent vision and complex brains which allow them to observe their environment and alter their skin patterning accordingly. Tropical cuttlefish are often brightly coloured: M. pfefferi can display in pinks, browns and yellows. Photographed off Sabah,Malaysia | |
