Flat-backed millipedes (family Polydesmidae) mating. A millipede's primary sexual organs are associated with their second pair of legs,on the third segment of their body. Before mating the male passes a packet of sperm, called a spermatophore,to modified legs on his seventh segment. Courtship begins with the male walking along the females back stimulating her with rhythmic pulses of his legs. The female then raises her front segments, aligning her sexual organs with the spermatophore, which is passed across. The female then lays her eggs in an underground nest.
