Male dust mite genital pore. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the genital pore of a male dust mite (Dermatophagoides sp. )The two structures (centre) are the paragynal lips which cover the penis. During mating, the male dust mite will mount onto the back of the female and rotate to face the opposite direction. He is held onto her by two paranal suckers located on the underside of his abdomen. Once in position, the penis becomes erect through haemolymphatic (body fluid) pressure and penetrates the female's genital opening. Magnification: x1940 when printed 10cm wide | |
