Honeybee mite. Light micrograph of a honeybee mite,Varroa jacobsoni. The mite is a parasite and has devastated hives of wild and domesticated bees in Europe. An infestation is often fatal to a bee colony within three to seven years, but low levels of infestation are often hard to detect until colony death becomes inevitable. Female mites attach themselves to the surface of an adult worker or drone bee and feeds by cutting holes in surface membranes. The mites then drop into the hive's brood cells and lay eggs. The mite larvae feed on developing bee larvae before emerging to complete the cycle. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size | |
