False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a nematode worm (Nematoda) investigating the back of a meal mite of the species Acarus siro. The two animals are on a sample of peat. The meal mite normally frequents granaries, mills & pantries, where it is able to reproduce rapidly under optimal conditions. It is also able to withstand poor environmental conditions by forming a resting stage which can survive for up to two years. Nematodes occur in vast numbers; they are free-living marine, freshwater & soil creatures,as well as plant & animal parasites. Some 80,000 species are known.
