Human flea. Light micrograph of a female human flea,Pulex irritans. The human flea has piercing,blood-sucking mouthparts and long hindlegs that enable it to jump from host to host. It is only 2- 3mm long but can clear 35cm in a single leap, reaching heights of up to 20cm. Its bite, although irritating as the name implies, does not transmit disease. The species is thought to have spread to humans from European badgers and is now found worldwide. Magnification x25 at 6x7cm size | |
