False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a cat flea Ctenocephalides felis, caught in the middle of a jump. At top is the helmet-shaped head with combs,a round compound eye,and palps (centre) from the biting mouthparts. The body is flattened laterally so that it is higher than wide, designed to maximise movement through the fur and hair of the host's skin. The strong spines on the body and head combs prevent the flea from slipping out of the fur. The jumping hindlegs are here extended, with hip and knee joints involved in propulsion. Ctenocephalides felis feeds on the blood of cats and mostly remains on the host only while feeding. Magnification: x75 at 4x5 inch,x45 at 6x7cm size | |
