Light micrograph of the human flea,Pulex irritans. Fleas are tiny wingless blood-sucking insects with laterally compressed bodies and long legs adapted for jumping. The human flea is two to three millimetres in length and can jump a distance of 35 cm along the ground and as much as 20 cm into the air. The bites of human fleas are irritating, but, unlike other species of flea, they are not responsible for the transmission of disease. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size | |
