Atlas moth wing. Macrophotograph of part of the wing of an atlas moth (Attacus atlas). Patterns like the one at centre may be flashed at predators to startle them. The atlas moth is one of the largest of all the moths, with a wingspan approaching 30 centimetres in some females. They inhabit the tropical forests of southern Asia and the Indonesian islands. As with all moths of its family (Saturniidae),the adults have no mouthparts, and cannot eat, existing only to breed. Magnification unknown | |
