Caterpillar of the pale tussock moth (Calliteara pudibunda) on a leaf. This is the larval stage of the moth. It is hairy to protect itself from being eaten by predators. The hairs can have an irritant effect if the caterpillar is handled. Caterpillars feed constantly, mostly on leaves as in this case. When fully grown,a caterpillar pupates into the winged adult form, with the females laying eggs to continue the cycle. This moth is found in Europe | |
