Close-up of the wing of a male butterfly of the family Morphidae. The exquisite iridescent blue is an effect of optical interference rather than coloration of the wing itself. Butterfly wings are covered in tiny scales; in Morphidae these layers of scales are transparent but refract and reflect light of different colours to different extents. This produces a shimmering blue appearance. The females of this family are brown. There are about 50 species known, found in South America where they circle round tall rainforest trees and only rarely descend to the ground. Unfortunately they are very popular as souvenirs, and are sometimes bred for this purpose | |
