Deformed honeybee pupae (Apis sp.). These pupae are from a colony that has been infested with Tropilaelaps clareae,a parasitic mite. Tropilaelaps is native to Asia. Its natural host is the giant Asian honeybee (Apis dorsata),though it readily infests other species of honeybee and has begun to spread westwards, potentially threatening European colonies of western honeybee (Apis mellifera) | |
