Cocktail ant nest. This nest was built by a colony of Crematogaster peringueyi cocktail ants. The cocktail ants (Crematogaster sp.) are named for the cocking action they carry out with their 'tail end' (abdomen) when threatened. They are arboreal ants, living in trees and bushes. This cocktail ant nests in vines, and is sometimes considered a pest in grape vineyards. Photographed in Howick,South Africa | |
