European hornet (Vespa crabro) on a man's hand. It is the largest of the European wasps, reaching up to 35 millimetres in length. Hornets have a reputation for being aggressive, but only sting when provoked. The sting contains a mixture of nerve stimulants, which causes the pain. Certain individuals may be allergic to the sting, which like stings from bees, may cause anaphylaxis. One symptom of an anaphylactic reaction is inflammation, which in extreme cases if located around the throat may result in asphyxia and death | |
